ROSA XANTHINA FO. HUGONIS
ASIATIC WILD ROSE / GOLDEN ROSE OF CHINA

The bright yellow blooms of the elegant Golden Rose of China have a rarity value among wild roses, and certainly many have had a sure eye for its beauty. Together with Rosa moyesii, also from China, it is the most frequently sought-after wild rose. The small, light yellow blooms begin to open as early as mid- may; they festoon the short side shoots right along the arching stems. The splendid blooms of Rosa xanthina fo. Hugonis make the most impact if planted as a specimen rose in front of a dark backdrop of trees. It is hardy and also suitable for dry locations. In very harsh zones it is recommended, however, to plant the rose on its own roots (not grafted), asit has been proved that if this is done it is even more resistant to frost and disease.

ROSA NUTKANA
AMERICAN WILD ROSE

Rosa nutkanais found in the western regions of North America right up to Alaska. It is a loose shrub that is hardy, tolerant of shade and suckers abundantly on its own roots. Its mauve-pink blooms emerge singly in June or July and are borne right along the stems. Its hybrid, 'Cantab', has even larger blooms. In addition to this rose there are numerous other American wild roses, which, as they were not introduced into Europe until the 18th century or even later, had of all the wild roses very little influence on the breeding of our Modern roses. Some of them, such as Rosa virginiana, Rosa Carolina or Rosa nitida, not only carry beautiful blooms and hips, but also dazzle in autumn with striking red foliage.

ZWERGKONIG
MINIATURE ROSEM

This brilliant red classic among miniature roses is just as suitable for tubs and troughs as it is for low hedges and edging to beds or borders. The crimson blooms open in June from pointed, conical buds. When fully opened, the petals stand out in stark contrast to the masses of golden-yellow stamens. The blooms grow in clusters, stand up well in rain, and emerge up until autumn. For larger pots, plant two to three roses for a really exuberant display. Plant 30 cm (12) apart in beds, and for mass planting seven to eight plants per square metre (square yard ) are needed. As this variety is susceptible to black spot and mildew, preventative spraying with fungicide is recommended when the leaves appear.
